Abyssinian Guinea pigs are cuddly, comical, and clever. They make wonderful pets for children and Families. They can be very social animals. The animals do better in pairs as they prefer company, so unless you have a lot of time to devote to your pet getting at least two is often a good idea. But remember, younger children should always be supervised around guinea pigs, just as with any other pet.
Size: Guinea pigs usually weigh around 3 ounces at birth, around 1-2 pounds full grown, and live for 5-7 years. An adult will measure 8-10 inches from the tip of its nose to the end of its rump.
Temperament & Personality: They are sociable animals and enjoy daily interaction. They are cuddly, comical, and clever, calm, lighthearted, jovial, expressive, obedient, soft and friendly They love to vocalize with squeals, chirps, squeaks, and whistles. Cavies have a very good sense of smell and sensitive hearing. Although not known for their intelligence, they do recognize their owners and will seek them out and return affection.
Activity Requirements: Exercise is important to the health of your guinea pig. Without exercise, your guinea pig can grow to be very docile and timid. Provide toys and make a play time each day so they wont get bored and over weight.
Grooming Requirements and Housing: Daily brushing with a soft brush or a metal greyhound comb will help remove some of the loose hair and lessen shedding. Daily brushing is especially important for long haired guinea pigs, less necessary for the short haired varieties One guinea pig: 7.5 square feet cage (minimum), but more is better; generally 30" x 36" is a good size. Temperature: The ideal temperature range for guinea pigs is approximately 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit. Two guinea pigs: 7.5 square feet (minimum), but 10.5 square feet is preferred; generally 30" x 50" is a good size.
Colors: Their hair comes in a wide range of colors and the hair may be long, short or short and curly. 13 distinct guinea pig breeds. Most breeds come with a variety of markings and colors, making each individual guinea pig unique unto himself. Common colors found in agouti coats are buff, golden brown, red, brown, dark brown and black.
History: Guinea pigs are tail-less rodents that are native to the west coast of South America and since the mid-1800’s, laboratories have used them for research. The correct name for guinea pigs is Cavy, pronounced “kay-vee”. The guinea pig was first domesticated as long ago as 2000BC in the Andes in South America, in the region now known as Peru and Bolivia. They were originally kept for food, but some may have become family pets for the children at that time.
